1. When do I need a building permit from the Construction Office ?

You will need a building permit for most types of renovations,additions or general home improvements including:

• Installation or replacement of hot water heaters,furnaces and boilers.
• Finishing a basement or attic.
• Kitchen and bathroom renovations when services for sinks,refrigerators,ovens,stoves or lighting are being altered or moved.
• Building or replacing a deck.
• Installation of a pool in ground,above ground and temporary pools capable of holding more than 24' of water.
• Removal/abandonment of oil tanks.
• New electric outlets, fixtures,wiring and upgrade of service.
• Solar panels.
• Emergency generators.
• Most other substantive home improvements where walls,doorways,openings and supporting utilities are being altered or moved.

2. How much will my construction permit cost?

The cost of permits is set by Boro Ordinance. The minimum fee is $65.00 Please call the office 732-828-2100 ext. 138 to find out the price for your specific permit.

3. Must I use a contractor for work done at my house?

If you own and reside in the home:

• The owner/resident may complete the work on their own home
• The owner/resident may have help, as long as the work is still being completed and supervised by the owner/resident
• This is only allowed for Single Family Dwellings.

Commercial, Two Families or Rentals:

• Any work that requires electrical, plumbing or fire protection must be done by a licensed contractor.

Permits and inspections are required for all relevant work whether performed by the home owner or contractor. Please contact the construction office at 732-828-2100 ext. 136 to ascertain the necessary permits and schedule inspections.

4. How do I schedule an inspection?

To schedule and inspection you must call the Construction Office- Monday through Friday 8:30-4:30-at 732-828-2100 ext.138. 

5. When are inspections done?

Inspection are done on either Tuesday or Thursday between 3pm and 6pm, by appointment.

6. What method of payment can I use when picking up my permit?

Payment must be made in exact cash or check payable to the Borough of Milltown.
