1. Do I need to make an appointment with the Registrar?

Yes. If an appointment is not made, there is no guarantee a registrar will be in the office or available to assist you in any matter needed to address. Please call 732-828-2100, ext. 181 or email Catherine Beardsley to schedule an appointment.

2. Can I get certified copies by mail?

Yes, please complete the certified copy application (PDF) and read the instructions (PDF) on how to obtain certified copies. Copies of identification, completed application and fee will need to be submitted in order to be processed.

3. Why hasn’t my license been mailed to me, my officiate said they dropped it off?

Certified copies are not automatically mailed to newlyweds. An application for certified copies must be made by the couple or someone eligible to obtain their records. For security purposes we are unable to confirm or deny if we have the requested document. A completed application with supporting documentation must be submitted for review.

4. What is the difference between a certified copy and marriage certificate?

A certified copy is the official document of your marriage with a raised seal. A marriage certificate, or your pink copy, is not a legal document.

5. How many witnesses do I need at the time of my marriage application?

You will need one witness at the time of application. The witness needs to be 18 years of age or older.

6. How many witnesses do I need at the ceremony?

You will need two witnesses at the ceremony.

7. I applied to get married, does that mean I am married?

No. It means that you have begun the process to get married. You will need an ordained officiant to perform your ceremony and two witnesses.

8. Does my last name automatically change after I am married?

No, you must go to social security with your certified copy to begin the name change process.

9. Do both partners need to be present to apply for certified copies of marriage, civil union or domestic partnership licenses?

No, only one eligible individual is needed for the certified copies.

10. Can I get more certified copies of Birth, Marriage, Civil Union, Domestic Partnership or Death at a later date?

Yes, but a new application (PDF) will be required and documentary proof.

11. I do not have all the information requested on the application for a certified copy. Can I leave some spaces blank and still receive the copies?

No. All requested items on the application (PDF) for certified copies must be completed and accurate. Failure to complete or correctly identify will result in the request being denied.

12. Will the Mayor marry us?

If you would like to request the Mayor to perform your marriage ceremony, please send the request via email to Catherine Beardsley. Please include dates you are requesting, time and location of the event. If there is flexibility on the date/time, please state same in your request.
